Choose Flooring by Room Conditions
Moisture, traffic, sun exposure, pets and adjoining rooms can make one material more practical than another. A bedroom and a kitchen do not always need the same installation system.
For broader floor projects outside this secondary category, see Flooring Installation.
Substrate Preparation Is Shared, but Not Identical
Every floor needs a suitable base, yet the tolerances differ by product. Concrete moisture, high spots, low areas and old adhesive can affect whether laminate, vinyl or wood can be installed as planned.
Removal Can Change the Scope
Old tile, glued sheet flooring, carpet or floating floors leave different conditions behind. The substrate should be reviewed after removal before a new floor is treated as ready to install.
Transitions and Trim Finish the Installation
Doorways, adjacent floor heights and baseboards influence the final appearance. Transition strips and trim should be selected for the materials meeting at each edge.
Choose a floor material before comparing installation and repair requirements: Laminate Flooring Installation & Repair covers locking joints and moisture limits; Linoleum Flooring Installation & Repair covers its substrate and seam needs; Vinyl Flooring Installation & Repair covers vinyl-specific options.
