Begin With Where the Tile Will Be Installed
A kitchen backsplash, bathroom floor, shower wall and outdoor tiled area face different moisture, movement and traffic conditions. The installation method should follow the location instead of treating tile as one universal finish.
For broader renovation planning, see Remodeling & Home Improvement.
The Substrate Determines the Quality of the Finished Plane
Tile does not correct a weak, moving or badly uneven substrate. Concrete, backer board, drywall and other approved substrates each have different preparation needs. Flatness becomes more important as tile size increases because high and low areas can affect alignment and lippage.
Damage or movement should be addressed before the tile layout is committed.
Removal Can Reveal Conditions Hidden by Old Tile
Removing an existing floor or wall finish may expose adhesive buildup, cracked concrete, damaged wallboard or an older repair. Those findings can change the preparation required for the new installation. Demolition should therefore be tied to the replacement plan rather than treated as an isolated step.
The exposed surface should reach the condition required by the selected tile system.
Tile Size and Pattern Change the Layout
Large-format tile, mosaics, subway patterns, herringbone and other layouts create different cut and alignment decisions. The room dimensions, focal points and visible edges influence where full tiles and cuts should fall. A layout should be established before setting begins so the finished pattern does not end awkwardly at a doorway or feature.
Wet Areas Need the Correct Water-Management Assembly
Showers and other wet applications require more than tile and grout. The substrate and waterproofing assembly should be appropriate to the selected system before the finish tile is installed. If waterproofing becomes its own significant scope, see Waterproofing.
FL-GoodHome does not describe tile itself as the waterproofing layer.
Grout, Transitions and Edges Complete the Installation
Grout-joint size, movement joints, transitions to adjacent flooring and exposed tile edges affect both appearance and serviceability. Trim profiles, bullnose or other edge solutions should be decided before the final rows are installed.
When tile is part of a larger bathroom project, use Bathroom Remodeling. Kitchen tile can be coordinated through Kitchen Remodeling.
Repair vs. Full Replacement
A few loose or damaged tiles may be repair candidates when matching material is available and the substrate remains sound. Widespread cracking, movement or water-related failure can indicate a larger assembly problem. A local repair should not be presented as the final solution when the failure extends beyond the affected tile.
FAQ
Can a cracked tile be replaced without redoing the whole floor?
Sometimes. The surrounding tile, available replacement material and substrate condition determine whether a local repair is practical.
Does tile installation include waterproofing?
Wet-area systems may require waterproofing, but the exact assembly should be separately defined. Tile alone is not the waterproofing layer.
Can tile be installed over existing tile?
Possibly in limited suitable situations, but existing adhesion, height, flatness and system requirements must be evaluated first.
What area do you serve?
